Pyotr Stolyarsky stands among the most influential teachers in violin history, the Odessa pedagogue whose school for gifted children produced David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein and effectively defined the Soviet violin school. Three traditions met in his own training. Through Młynarski he inherited the Russian school of Leopold Auer, itself rooted in Joachim’s German classicism and, further back, in the French discipline of Rode. Through Karbulka came the Bohemian precision of Otakar Ševčík, whose analytical method reshaped modern technical practice. Through Barcewicz came both the Prague line and, by way of Kątski, a direct echo of Paganini’s virtuosity. However distinct these paths, they converge on Giovanni Battista Viotti, father of modern violin playing, and through Pugnani and Somis reach back to Arcangelo Corelli, the fountainhead of the Italian tradition.
